ITS CHRISTMAS !! I would like to wish everyone a wonderful christmas day and happy boxing week shopping!!

Also, here is an update on what has been happening in the past month or so!! Back at the end of November (yes, i know, pretty much a month ago), we had Cooking Class Activity organized by our own Alex Mach, Benjamin Hui, Michelle Phung and Jennifer Su. There was a baking section as well as a sauté section. It was a fun day of cooking and great food was made. More pictures and other updates after the break.

The next week, we had our Annual Buddhism Examination, where it tests our knowledge on various aspects of Buddhism. Congratulations to Lily Ho, and Anita Minh of YAD in society on getting highest marks among the adult exam. As for YAD in Schooling, congratulations to Jessica Siew, Phynicia and Zemil Choy getting the highest marks among the youth exams.

On New Years Day, we are planning to bring in the new year with a winter retreat. We will be bring ourselves closer as a group and also become stronger for the coming year as we prepare for the 2013 regional conference. Till then, be safe during the mad rush for cheap shopping and stay safe going into the new year!!~

Activites Update!!~

During Thanksgiving weekend, on Oct 8th, we had a YAD Gathering. It was a simple event to just have fun and talk amongst ourselves. Also. it was to update on what's to come and among other things. We played a bit of bingo and mingled, also had a game of risk going, while others were jamming out with their instruments. A few picture below~

This Saturday, Oct 22nd, we will be having out YAD Election. We will be electing all new candidates for various positions, and thus leading us the next 2 years as well as the 2013 Regional Conference. We will be posting the results here as well when it is official. And after the election is done, as the previous post showed, we will be going out for some bowling!!! Look forward to pictures and updates on that early next week.

YAD Movie Day (Sept 17, 2011)

Last Saturday, T.O. YAD had their first fall gathering with our "Movie Day" event. The movie we watched was Groundhog Day Starring Bill Murray. He plays Phil Connors, an egocentric Pittsburg TV weatherman who is given an assignment to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in a small town called Punxsutawney. He then finds himself repeating the same day over and over again. Below is a small clip from the movie.

After the movie, we had a small discussion about the themes in the movie and touched on other various topics. Overall, it was a nice get together and it was a lot of fun. Thanks again to fellow YAD member, Leslie Seto, for letting us use his house, and thanks to his parents for providing us with dinner =D.

YAD Marooned on Center Island 2011

If you didn't know, our YAD was shipped off to Center Island on Saturday. We all proudly wore our maroon shirts and as someone described it, stood out like "a giant pimple". The turnout was great and the weather was good to us. I think I got a nice tan out of it too! The main organizer was Elaine Chen, and the co-organizers were Ven. Jue Qian, Anita Minh, Cynthia Minh, and Leslie Seto, so if you had fun, don't forget to go and thank them for their hard work!

Mother's Day

Hi everyone!

Thanks for helping us raise money for the 2011 Regional Youth Conference!! And thanks for helping us make Mother's day so wonderful!

Anyway I've enclosed the Mother's Day video that was playing today and a slideshow of the pictures from the past two weeks. Just in case you missed it during lunch.

Too bad I missed the main shrine performance though, so I wasn't able to capture it. If any of you have it, leave a note!

Also, this is the 6th year that we volunteering with the Mississauga Marathon! It is a very fun event to volunteer, to share some laughters with the team!

Your job is to hand water/energy drinks to the full/half marathon runners and cheer for them! Here are more details:

Mississauga Marathon
Volunteer at the 10K Water Station

Location: Mississauga Rd and Seven Oaks Drive (south of Dundas)
Date: Sunday, May 16, 2009
Time: 7am - 10:30am (please arrive well before 7am as the Mississauga Rd will be closed for the marathon after 7am)

Duties:
* Fill THOUSANDS of water/Gatorade cups and give them to the marathon runners
* Cheer for the runners
* Clean up after the last runner passes our station

To sign up, please provide
* your age, if below 18
* phone # (preferably cell phone numbers so you can be notified of the last minute updates if that come up)

and pick one of the options below
o (1) you will need rides
o (2) you are able to provide rides to the youth who live close to you
o (3) you will arrange your own transportation

Getting ready for Mother's day Pt.1

We've had a pretty busy weekend!

Some youth came in early to help out with the food serving. I took a peek in the kitchen, and have realized that it really is a lot of work to prepare a single meal for such a large number of people. Just imagine the number of vegetables you need wash, pick, and then chop up, and then the number of dishes you need to wash! If you would like to help out (and learn some good cooking tips too) send an email to us!

And to add a veil of mystery... here's a clue as to what we are doing (1 out of 3 things) for Mother's Day...

Want to join in on the fun? Come by next Saturday (afternoon) and Sunday(morning) to help out!

Description: we will be baking cookies and packaging them to sell on Mother's Day.
Money raised will go to the 2011 North America YAD Conference in Toronto.

May 8 (Sat.) - Making carnation pins

Description: we will be making corsages using freshly bought carnations to give out on Mother's Day.

Canadian Cancer Society Daffodils

You know it's springtime when we start selling daffodils!
Anyway, without getting too wordy, here are some daffodil selling pictures from March 27-28. It was to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. I think total we raised about $1700 from selling 200 bundles...some generous people even donated money and didn't take the flowers. : )

Public Service Announcement

The 2010 International Buddha's Light Young Adult Conference will be held this year from August 1-4. If you have been with YAD for at least one year, we encourage you to take part in the Conference! You will find attached the registration form for the conference, please complete and return it to Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto at your earliest convenience.

Please also note that registration for the conference is $50USD, and other costs include airfare and tour before/after the conference.

Remember to keep checking us for updates and announcements!

There will be an International Youth Seminar taking place in Taiwan this year, from August 6th to 14th (9 days), covering a wide range to topics from EQ management, the environment, to Buddhism.

This seminar is open to all young adults between the age of 18 and 35 (including non-YAD members), and all costs will be covered by seminar sponsors, with the exception of airfare. If you would like to find more information regarding the seminar in Chinese and Enligsh, (as well as a registration form), please contact us. torontoyad@gmail.com
If you are interested, or know someone who may be interested in participating in the seminar, please complete the registration form, and return it to Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto before the May 15 deadline.

March Activity Day

On the 20th, we had an Activity day! Remember the poster? If you missed out on this one, there will be another one coming up in a month or so...So keep your eyes peeled. The weather will also be nicer so we'll be able to take you guys outdoors!

Anyway, sorry for the lack of photos this time, someone was having too much fun to remember to take photos hehe. This month's activity day included a bit of Buddhism 101 and problem solving mixed together. Basically, there were tasks and clues all over the temple and everyone had to go find them to solve the puzzle. Who solved it first? It wasn't me...

We ended our day with a friendly game of Jeopardy. Guess what the winning prize was? Buddhist knowledge!

Offering ceremony for Buddhas and Celestial Guardians (供佛齋天)and Food Serving Volunteers

For those who didn't know, there was an Offering ceremony for Buddhas and Celestial Guardians this weekend at the temple. What's that you ask? Well, simply put, it's like a ceremony inviting heavenly deities. Typically, it's held two days before lunar new year, but that's usually the busiest time for everyone, so to accommodate everyone we usually have it within the 10 days of the lunar new year. So anyway, similar to having valued guests in the house we serve offerings like tea, dimsum etc. to them. Too bad if you missed out! It's quite a sight to see.

Chinese New Year 2010: 威德福海

Happy chinese new year everyone! This year's new year is special because it's the year of the golden tiger and valentine's day all in one!

Every year our YAD has a Wishing tree set-up for people to make wishes for the new year. They write their names on the back of their wish and then take their wishes and hang them on the tree.

All of us stayed until 2am on New Year's eve and many of us worked tirelessly over the weekend, doing more than what was asked. So for all of you out there who were here with us, Thank you!! It was a great new year~

This is just a reminder to pay and/or pick up your transcribing kit from from Mylin. Once you've finished transcribing the Sutra, please bring it back to the Temple in the envelope found inside the kit.

If you haven't gotten around to finishing the transcription, no worries! Come to the temple on January 24th at 10am and join everyone to transcribe together!

Halloween Gathering and Montreal Updates

Food Offering Table for Emperor Liang's Ceremony

Last week we organzied the Food Offering table for Emperor Liang's Ceremony.

Every year around this time (for more precise dates please refer to the actual chinese lunar calendar) , it is the Ghost Festival in the Chinese lunar calendar. What is the Ghost festival?

Well, the Chinese people, believe it is the most revere time to offer tributes and pay respect

to the deceased and our ancestors.

It was a mess! We couldn't just put the food offering there without decorating it.

Time for some creativity!

Relief Fundraising for Nautral Disater in Taiwan

As many of you have heard by now Typhoon Morakot's hit on Taiwan

have caused many people to lose their family, friends and homes.

Organizations around the world are doing their part with the relief cause.

We are holding our own as well! This Sunday(August 16, 2009, 10AM) is the chanting service for all those who are affected by the typhoon. We are also selling the Tea Cup, trying to raise as much funds as we can.

Come to the temple and show your support, ANY amount of donation is good.

All the funds go directly to the FGS of Taiwan and then passing out to

the proper relief organizations.

Please stay tuned with more details regarding volunteer work in support of aiding

the relief fund.

YAD Activity Day

On July 12th, we had our Activity Day. It was loads of fun and we met many new people. After a brief self introduction of everyone, we played a game based on the information we just learned about each other.

We played "spud" outside too. The weather was awesome!

We were also asked to participate in a stop motion animation for the Y.A.D. conference presentation. Here's a still from it,(where you can see how much fun we had) and if you want to watch the animation, a copy of it has already been posted in the entry before this one.

veggie foodfair is coming on May 24, 2009 and this year our performance is the

S T O M P dance! here are some rehearsal pictures :D

now, something a little different...we're incorporating the FGS song into the STOMP dance

as well!

Moms we loved you!

well this was for mommy's day, we were getting ready to suprise our moms. :D

this is us, getting it together one last time.

2009 Mother's Day Preparations

Mother's day at the temple means handmade carnation brooches from YAD!

The first time we did it was in 2001 (or something like that) and from then on, it has become a yearly tradition.

So today, we all gathered at FGS to do the preparations.

There isn't much, but the carnation brooches take time, effort and nimble fingers.

Not only that, but doing it by hand makes the gift more heartfelt... and fun!
